New books (or books with updated information)

Lonnie Johnson was a key figure in the introduction of the guitar to the Blues. Previous to Johnson's work, the fiddle, and banjo were standard instruments to African American nineteenth century music, and the guitar of Lonnie helped to popularize was not well known. If one should point out one great grandfather of blues-guitar, it have to be Lonnie Johnson. The "blues revival" has been very much focused on country blues. Lonnie Johnson was a city boy, who grew up in New Orleans and played New Orleans jazz. He played with jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Eddie Lang and Duke Ellington. But he also had great influence on country blues players. Robert Johnson was just one of the many who was influenced by Lonnie Johnson. He is also some kind of a bridge between the country blues and the more jazz influenced blues playing in the cities.

For more biographical information, go to some of the web-sites mentioned below.

He has a single-string style, combined with bass. From a guitar players point of view, his earlier work is most interesting. Almost everything he recorded is in the key of D. There is a slight controversy over his guitar playing. Stefan Grossman thinks he plays in Dropped-D tuning, while Woody Mann and Lenny Carlson thinks he played in a Dropped D-G tuning (D-G-D-G-B-E). I do not have the answer, but both tunings seem to work.

Later in his career, Lonnie Johnson became much more a mainstream blues player.
