The blues progression can be varied in may ways. In this lesson we will look at a few variations.

One variation in 2nd line is to play IV - VIIb - I - I instead of IV - IV - I - I. It gives the blues a mixolydian feel.

Another variation is to play the VI at the end of line 2. We would usually expect a minor chord as a VI chord, but here it is a major chord. This gives us a minor to major substitution.

If we combine the two variations, we get IV - VIIb - I - VI. You can hear this in the song Wrapping Paper recorded by The Cream

In the last line one can play the two first bars as E - D7 | F#7 - F7 | E7 ..., as in Eric Clapton's Roll It Over
