Lightnin' Hopkins - videos (DVD)
Books - DVD - Recordings - CDs -Equipment
Sam "Lightning" Hopkins was the most poetic, haunting and unforgettable country blues bard, with a personal guitar style, to emerge from the streets of Houston, Texas, during the first wave of Rhythm and Blues in the early 1950s.
I list Sam "Lightning" Hopkins because he was a very influential guitarist, with his driving bass with typical licks on top. Some typical elements of his playing is discussed in my Blues Guitar Series. When you hear someone say Texas Blues Guitar, you may immediately think of Steve Ray and Jimmie Vaughn or maybe Freddie King. The invisible presence, buried deep in everyone of their guitar riffs, is the true king of Texas blues, Lightnin' Hopkins. Lightnin', who knew Blind Lemon Jefferson as a child, is Jimmie Vaughan's favorite guitarist.
