Willie Brown I - the man who played with Charley Patton, Son House and Robert Johnson

There are at least three Willie Browns in the history of blues guitar. The first was one of the delta blues pioneers. He was an extraordinary guitarist, but spent most of his time as sideman for people like Charley Patton, Son House and Robert Johnson. There are only three solo recordings by Willie Brown, and I to admit that I only know two of them. These are M&O Blues and Future Blues, two of the more sophisticated songs recorded in the delta. The third song is a version of Make Me a Pallet on the Floor, recorded by Alan Lomax in 1941. Some say that a fourth song, Rowdy Blues, credited to some Kid Baily is also a Willie Brown recording, but this is debated.

His M&O Blues is a variation over the Pony Blues Theme, played in the key of E. From a guitaristic point of view, it has many similarities with Big Bill Broonzy's Hey, Hey, Hey, a song more recently made fomous by Eric Clapton's recording on his album Unplugged.

Future Blues is a rythmically very sophisticated tune played in Open G tuning. John Fahey once used to call Stefan Grossman "The Future Man", because Stefan was one of the very few at the time who had mastered Future Blues.

Willie Brown II - Mississippi Blues

We know next to nothing about this Willie Brown. The tune Mississippi Blues was recorded by Library of Congress. This tune has become one of the most popular blues tune among blues fingerpickers. It seems to have become some kind of a graduation piece. When you have mastered this one, then you can pick the blues. It is a beatuiful guitar piece which is imitating the 1920's blues piaon style. You can find this piece in my Blues Guitar Lessons. It is divieded in two: Part 1 (Verse) and Part 2 (Break). On the record mentioned below, there is also the song Four O'Clock Flower Blues , recorded as a duet with William Blackewell.

This is the third Willie Brown. I only know him from the Library of Congress recording mentioned above. He is represented with two songs, Ragged And Dirty and East St. Louis Blues . The first one is included in Stefan Grossman's Delta Blues Guitar.

    Recordings of Mississippi Blues

This tune is recorded by a number of artists. I have included a list of records where you can hear different versions of the tune. Maybe one of your favourite players have recorded the song?
